Today I was faster than a train,
on my way home I was faster
I had no where to be
but I beat that train
At home she was there
She was there and she was different
Tired, for she was faster than I
The two of us, faster than trains,
Whispered as you slept in some cozy chair
As you slept and dreamt of action and agency
My thoughts spun skeins of wool
Your hair blew back in the sad wind of the fan
I knitted my thoughts with my fingers
Until I had a scarf long enough to cover your neck
We ran off into the night
And I know you didn't wake
Faster than trains we loved and lied
to the night and to ourselves
I stood like a lamppost
and watched and she slipped away,
Clumsy, like smoke
I walked home, not even faster than a snail
You were still asleep
You are always asleep
